2008 was an amazing year for music. It’s almost unbelievable that songs produced in 2008 are now ten years old. These songs were among each artist’s best work at the time of release. All of these artists have continued to make incredible music to this day, incorporating style changes and new expressions in their work.
Beyoncé, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”
This song from Beyoncé’s third album, I am… Sasha Fierce, is a classic anthem of female empowerment with a stylish hip-hop twist. The iconic music video features a dance by choreographer Frank Gaston, inspired by a 1969 performance on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Beyoncé’s output has continued to be stellar, winning more than a dozen Grammys since the song was released. Her songs have since become more personal, including the smash hit “Lemonade.”
Coldplay, “Viva La Vida”
“Viva La Vida”, from the album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, is one of Coldplay’s most beloved songs. Since “Viva La Vida,” Coldplay and frontman Chris Martin have gone on to collaborate with some of pop’s best artists like Rihanna and The Chainsmokers.
In 2014, Coldplay announced that they will no longer be producing new music together after the Head Full of Dreams album. The band have not ruled out working together in the future, but not in a standard Coldplay album format.
M.I.A., “Paper Planes”
British rap artist, M.I.A., became popular in the United States when “Paper Planes” was released as part of the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. The song is a slow tempo rap with subversive, funny lyrics about the forging of immigration documents. The song was controversial due to its drug references and firearms sounds.
In M.I.A.’s native Sri Lanka, the song was not played on the radio or on television.
M.I.A. has continued to produce popular albums in dance and electronica. M.I.A. has reportedly said that her most recent album, A.I.M., will be her last.
Katy Perry, “I Kissed a Girl”
“I Kissed a Girl” is remembered for its then-controversial lyrics and theme. The song is from her second album, One of the Boys. The strong percussive beat and rock-inspired sounds were created by producer Dr. Luke. The song was nominated for a Grammy.
Perry has gone on to produce several more high-charting albums. Her music has moved away from the simple pop anthems she produced early in her career and has become more universal and inspiring, as in the single “Firework”.
Taylor Swift, “Love Story”
“Love Story” was released as part of Swift’s second studio album, Fearless. The song is a country pop anthem. It reworks the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, giving the story a happy ending.
Swift’s music has developed a great deal since “Love Story”. While her songs remain intensely personal, she has taken on a strong and almost defiant persona in her songwriting, as on the album Reputation.
